This Continuing Legal Education Seminar is designed introduce practitioners to Advance Directives and the new Illinois Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST). The Seminar will begin with an overview of the common Illinois Advance Directives, including the 2011 revisions to the Power of Attorney Act.
The Seminar will then turn to the implementation of the new Illinois Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST). The statute directing the State of Illinois to create a POLST Paradigm was enacted in January, 2012. In the year since the enacted of the statute, great strides have taken place in the creation of the POLST form and implementation of POLST.
Finally, the Seminar will look at the interaction between the various forms and how they may work together to provide adults, and, in particular, the aging population, with the ability to appoint decision makers and set their End of Life affairs in order and to allow themselves to die with dignity.
